She stepped in front of an oncoming SUV, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

SEMINOLE – A Palm Harbor woman died of injuries she received when she was hit while crossing Seminole Boulevard on Wednesday (Dec. 13) night, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Kala Gombos, 23, of Palm Harbor, died at St. Petersburg General Hospital where she was taken after the crash.

The crash happened about 8:45 p.m. on Seminole Boulevard, just north of 53rd Avenue N. Deputies said Dwight Wood, 68, was driving his 2000 Toyota 4-Runner southbound in the median lane of Seminole Boulevard approaching the intersection of 53rd Avenue when Ms. Gombos stepped into the roadway in front of him. Ms. Gombos was not using a designated crosswalk and Woods was unable to stop  or take evasive action before hitting her.

Neither speed nor impairment appear to be a factor in the crash, deputies said.
