Semi Fire Closes Southbound I-75 for Hours

No one was injured, FHP troopers said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A fire that consumed a semi tractor-trailer closed southbound I-75 for several hours this morning (May 23), the Florida Highway Patrol said.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Troopers said that, about 4:12 AM, Emmen Ahmed, 45, of Henrico, VA,, was driving a 2012 Volvo tractor trailer southbound on I-75, north of Fletcher Avenue in Hillsborough County when a mechanical issue developed near the rear tandem axle.

A fire began at the rear of the tractor and, despite efforts by Ahmed, could not be contained. The fire spread throughout the vehicle and was later put out by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

The incident closed the southbound lanes of I-75 for several hours, with two lanes reopened aboutt 7:30 a.m. and all lanes opened about 8:15 a.m.

As of mid-morning, crews were on-site removing the transported load of 5,000 pounds of new, but empty, Bang energy drink cans labeled for purple guava pear and peach mango flavors.
