Section of Alt. U.S. 19 to Close for Work on Pinellas Trail

Trusses on two Pinellas Trail bridges will be replaced.

PALM HARBOR – Pinellas County will begin replacing the Pinellas Trail pedestrian bridges over Alt. U.S. 19 and Orange Street in Palm Harbor this weekend, requiring nightly road closures from Sunday (Dec. 2) through Wednesday (Dec. 5).

Alternate U.S. 19 will be closed between Curlew Road and Tampa Road between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. each night to all but local traffic. Detour signs will direct through traffic to alternate routes, while law enforcement personnel provide access to neighborhood residents. Variable message signs are currently in place advising commuters of the closure.

The trail crossing area at Alt. U.S. 19 will also be closed to all pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians will not be allowed to cross Alt. U.S. 19 or Orange Street during the removal and setting of the bridges.

The bridges were closed in September 2017 because of excessive rusting of the steel trusses. New steel trusses with improved coatings have been fabricated off-site. In a revised construction schedule announced last month, the county’s contractor will mobilize equipment on-site on Friday (Nov. 30), remove the old trusses Sunday and Monday and lift the new ones into place Tuesday and Wednesday. Concrete decks will be poured in early January, and the work is scheduled for completion in mid-February.

The Pinellas Trail will remain closed in the impacted area until the new bridge opens. Trail users can find two detour options at pinellascounty.org.
