PINELLAS COUNTY – A scooter driver died Tuesday (Dec. 20) when he was hit from behind by a SUV, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Jesop I. Ash, 36, of Pinellas Park, died at the scene. He was wearing a helmet, the FHP said.

The crash happened about 10:10 p.m. on County Road 296 west of 98th Street N. Mr. Jesop, who was driving a 2014 Tao I scooter, and a 2008 Toyota SUV driven by Shayne D. Murphy, 24, of St. Petersburg, were headed east on CR 296. Troopers said Murphy did not see the scooter, overtook it and collided with it from the rear. Both vehicles came to a final rest in the outside travel lane of CR 296 with the rear of the scooter under the front left of the SUV. A post-crash fire damaged both vehicles.
