Riverview Man Dies After Three-Vehicle I-275 Crash

The truck he was driving hit a guardrail, overturned and traveled into oncoming traffic.

PINELLAS COUNTY – A Riverview man died of injuries he suffered Friday (Oct. 5) in a three-vehicle crash on I-275, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Marco Gonzalez-Vargas, 52, of Riverview, died at a local hospital. Menihla D. Johnson, 17, of St. Petersburg, the driver of one of the other vehicles, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with minor injuries. Two children who were passengers in her car, Kemaud Johnson and Kihori Johnson, both 7, of St. Petersburg, were taken to All Children’s Hospital with minor injuries. No one else was injuried in the crash.

The crash happened about 3:10 p.m. on I-275 at about mile post 21 in Pinellas County.

Johnson was driving a 2004 Infiniti G35 north on I-275 in the center lane. Mr. Gonzalez-Vargas was driving a 2019 Peterbilt truck north on I-275 in the inside lane. Troopers said the two vehicles collided and traveled into the center median where the Infiniti hit a tree.

The truck hit the guardrail and overturned. It then traveled into the southbound lanes of I-275 spilling its load of dirt and colliding with a 2014 BMW 328i driven by Lesley Anne Cooper, 62, of St. Petersburg.
