NEW PORT RICHEY – A teenager died this morning (Aug. 13) of injuries he received when hit while crossing U.S. 19 Saturday (Aug. 12) night, the New Port Richey Police Department said.

Dustin Chyben, 18, of New Port Richey, died at Bayonet Point Hospital where he was taken after the crash.

The crash happened about 9:45 p.m. on U.S. 19 in front of the McDonald’s south of Gulf Drive, police said. Mr. Chyben, who was not crossing in a designated crosswalk at the time and was dressed in all black clothing, stepped in front of a vehicle driven by Jonathan Matthews, 40, of Spring Hill, and was hit.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash. Speed is also not a factor, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
