No one was injured, Tampa police said.

TAMPA – An unmarked Tarpon Springs police SUV caught fire Thursday and set off the ammunition that was stored in the vehicle, the Tampa Police Department said.

No one was injured during the incident, which, police said, resulted in harmless noises similar to the sound of fireworks. The only property damage was to the car itself. The fire resulted in the temporary closing of westbound Kennedy Boulevard.

The driver, a detective from the Tarpon Springs Police Department, told officers that, at about 5:46 p.m. he was driving westbound on Kennedy Boulevard when the air conditioning in his unmarked SUV appeared to
go out. The driver said he heard the sound of a pop and saw smoke coming from under the hood.

He was able to safely pull into a strip mall at 4331 W Kennedy Blvd. that had very few vehicles in it.

The driver moved safely away from the vehicle. After a few minutes, the ammunition started to go off.
