Police: Chain Reaction Crash Caused When Driver Intentionally Hit Concrete Median

Two others were seriously injured and a puppy was killed in the Courtney Campbell crash, the Tampa Police Department said.

TAMPA – Two people were injured and a puppy was killed in a chain reaction crash caused when a man, who was upset over a recent breakup, intentionally drove his vehicle into the concrete median on the Courtney Campbell Causeway, according to the Tampa Police Department.

The two injured were taken to areas hospitals with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. They were not in the vehicle that caused the crash. The puppy was 2 months old.

The despondent driver was taken into involuntary protective custody under the Baker Act and taken to a hospital for a mental health examination. Police did not release his name.

The crash happened about 2 a.m. today (July 7) in the westbound lanes of the Courtney Campbell at the Pinellas County line. The crash closed the roadway for about two hours.

Police said the investigation revealed that a driver despondent over a recent breakup intentionally veered his vehicle into the concrete median wall. Five other vehicles then collided with his vehicle in a chain reaction crash. Racing was not a factor in the crash.
