PINELLAS COUNTY – The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a crash Wednesday (Sept. 27) that involved a deputy.

Deputy Mark Reeves, who has worked for the Sheriff’s Office since Oct 12, 2012, was taken to an emergency clinic with minor injuries. The other driver, Chester Dunham, 67, of Pinellas Park, was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The crash happened about 10:55 a.m. at 54th Avenue and 40th Street N in the unincorporated Lealman area. Deputies said Reeves was traveling eastbound on 54th Avenue in his 2015 marked Chevrolet Tahoe with his emergency lights and sirens activated, responding to a call for help. A 2008 Ford Escape, driven by Dunham, was also eastbound and was stopped for traffic.

Reeves drove into the median westbound lanes to pass stopped traffic, Dunham tried to make left turn into a business. Dunham turned into Reeves’ patrol SUV while he was still operating with emergency lights and siren, deputies said.

Impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
