The pedestrian was hit twice. One car stayed at the scene. An SUV kept going.

ST. PETERSBURG – Police are searching for an SUV that left the scene after it hit a pedestrian late Monday (Jan. 9) night.

The identity of the dead man, whom officers described as a “transient pedestrian,” is being withheld until his next of kin are notified, the St. Petersburg Police Department said. The man died at Humana Northside where he was taken after the crash.

The crash happened about 10:37 p.m. Officers said a man was sitting in the northbound lane next to the median near the double yellow lines in the 3500 block of 49th Street N. As an eyewitness was slowing to block the roadway, a light-colored, full-sized SUV, that was northbound on 49th, struck the pedestrian. The SUV slowed momentarily, then sped off, northbound on 49th, police said.

While the witness was on the phone with 911, a second northbound vehicle, a 2014 Chevrolet driven by Alma Moulton also struck the pedestrian. Moulton stayed at the scene and also called 911, police said.

The vehicle that left the scene was described as a white or silver full-sized sport utility vehicle, possibly a Chevrolet Tahoe or similar vehicle, officers said. The SUV should have damage to the left front corner of the vehicle. Anyone with information about the crash or the vehicle should contact the St Petersburg Police Department at (727) 893-7780.
