The driver did not see the man, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

THONOTOSASSA – A Thonotosassa man was seriously injured Wednesday (Sept. 27) night when he was hit by a truck while walking in a roadway, the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office said.

Charles Edward Dunaway, 41, of Thonotosassa, was taken to Tampa General Hospital with critical injuries. The driver, James Maye, 38, of Thonotosassa, was not injured.

The crash happened about 11:33 p.m. on Main Street just west of Leland Hawes Road. Deputies said Dunaway, who was wearing dark clothing, was walking east on an unlit portion of Main with a friend. Dunaway was walking in the eastbound lane and the friend was just off the south shoulder of the roadway.

Maye was driving a 2008 Chevrolet truck and, because of an oncoming motorcycle with bright lights and Dunaway’s dark clothing, failed to see Dunaway.

The front of Maye’s truck struck the Dunaway. Maye swerved to the left after hitting him. The truck then ran over Dunaway who had been thrown forward.
