Pasco Crash Kills Motorcyclist

He was thrown from the motorcycle.

PASCO COUNTY – A New Port Richey man died from injuries he received in a traffic crash Thursday (Sept. 7), the Florida Highway Patrol said.

James M. Shortt III, 35, of New Port Richey, died at the Medical Center of Trinity where he was taken after the crash. He was not wearing a helmet. The other driver was not injured.

The crash happened about 5:35 p.m. at the intersection of State Road 54 and Starkey Boulevard. A 2016 Ford Focus driven by Kathryn L. Branca, 63, of New Port Richey, was headed east in the left turn lane of SR 54. Mr. Shortt was riding a 2002 Honda VT750 west on SR 54.

The Focus turned left into the path of the motorcycle, which hit the car. Troopers said Mr. Shortt was thrown from the motorcycle, which caught fire after the crash.
