Deputies said it is unclear what caused the erratic driving that caused the single-car crash, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

PALM HARBOR – A driver died of injuries he received Tuesday (Aug. 28) when his car hit a light pole and a tree, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Austin R. Marr was taken by Bayflight to St Joseph’s Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The crash happened about 6:55 p.m. on Curlew Road in front of 1750 Curlew Road in Palm Harbor.

Mr. Marr was driving his 2014 Volkswagen GTI west bound on Curlew Road. Witnesses, including off-duty Deputy D. Gregory, drove past Marr who initially appeared to be slowing and/or stopped along the curb lane of Curlew Road just west of Belcher Road.

Gregory told investigators that, before he could safely turn around to check on Mr. Marr, the Volkswagen abruptly accelerated westbound on Curlew Road at a high rate of speed and turned left in a south direction across all lanes of traffic. The car first struck a light pole, a utility box and traffic sign, then became airborne and struck a large oak tree before coming to a stop.

Paramedics arrived on scene and extricated Mr. Marr from his badly damaged vehicle. Investigators say it is unknown what caused the erratic driving that led to the crash.
