Motorcyclist, Passenger Serious After Haines Road Crash
Alcohol did not play a role in the crash, St. Petersburg police said.
ST. PETERSBURG – A motorcyclist and his passenger were seriously injured Saturday (Feb. 9) when they were thrown from the bike during a crash on Haines Road, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.
David Rankin, 63, and his passenger, Allegro Rankin, 60, of St. Petersburg, were taken to Bayfront Health St Petersburg in serious condition. They were both wearing helmets.
Ther crash happened about 1:50 p.m. at the intersection of Haines Road and 19th Street N in St. Petersburg.
Police said David Rankin was driving a 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle east on Haines Road when the bike was hit by a 2014 Lexus GS350 driven by Thomas Joseph Zopf II , 20, of St. Petersburg. The Lexus had been stopped at a sign on southbound 19th Street N, but failed to yield when it started moving again. The impact caused both Rankins to be thrown from the motorcycle.
Alcohol did not play a role in the crash. Police said the investigation is continuing and charges are pending.
