Motorcyclist, Passenger Die in Head-On Crash

A woman from Zephyrhills was seriously injured in the crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

POLK COUNTY – A motorcyclist and his passenger were killed and another woman was seriously injured Sunday (July 29) in a head-on crash on U.S. 98, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The names of the motorcyclist, 72, and his female passenger, 70, both from Lakeland, were being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The two died at the scene.

Laura Scott Belotti, 61, of Zephyrhills, was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

The crash happened about 4:27 p.m. on U.S. 98 north of Rockridge Road in Polk County.

Troopers said Belotti was driving a 2013 Ford Escape north on U.S. 98. She drove into the southbound lanes to try passing another vehicle. The Ford drove into the path of the 2008 motorcycle and hit it head on. Both the motorcycle driver and passenger were thrown from the bike.
