The other driver was cited, Pinellas deputies said.

OLDSMAR – A motorcyclist was injured and a driver was cited after a crash on Tampa Road this morning (March 15), the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Zachary Mortara, 24, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was wearing a helmet.

The other driver, Kyle Gerber, 18, of New Port Richey, was not injured. Deputies said he was issued a citation for Improper/Unsafe U-turn.

The crash happened about 11:40 a.m. at the intersection of Tampa Road and Sunflower Drive in Oldsmar.

Gerber was driving a 2006 Hyundai Elantra east on Tampa Road, preparing to make a U-turn at Sunflower Drive, to go west on Tampa Road. Mortara was driving west on Tampa Road on his 2005 Yamaha YZF-R1.

As Gerber made the U-turn in front of oncoming traffic, deputies said, Mortara was unable to stop or avoid Gerber’s Hyundai and hit the front passenger side of the car. Mortara was thrown from the motorcycle.

Neither speed nor impairment appeared to be a factor in the crash.
