He was thrown from the motorcycle. No one on the school bus was hurt, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

PINELLAS COUNTY – A motorcyclist died this morning (Sept. 18) when he was thrown from his bike after hitting a Pinellas County school bus, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Mitchell Austin Roberge, 18, of  St. Petersburg, died at the scene. No one on the bus, which was carrying seven children to Sawgrass Elementary School, was hurt.

The crash happened about 6:54 a.m. at the intersection of 49th Street N and 58th Avenue. Troopers said Mr. Roberge was traveling north on a 2013 Honda on 49th “at a high rate of speed, completing multiple lane changes.” The bus, a 2002 International driven by Gayle Eliachar, 58, of Clearwater, was traveling south on 49th.

The bus turned east onto 58th Avenue “well in advance” of the Honda, troopers said. When the Honda reached the intersection, it changed lanes again to pass another northbound vehicle and collided with the right rear corner of the school bus. Mr. Roberge, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bike.
