One lane of the Courtney Campbell remains closed because of damage to the road, Tampa police say.

TAMPA – One person died and another is in critical condition after a Saturday (July 30) motorcycle crash that closed the westbound Courtney Campbell Causeway for several hours.

The names of the victims have not been released and details are sketchy.

Tampa police say the crash happened about 9:17 p.m. when two motorcycles going westbound on the Courtney Campbell crashed. One motorcyclist was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital and pronounced dead. The other, listed in critical condition late Saturday night, was taken to Bayfront Health.

Westbound lanes of the Courtney Campbell were closed for several hours and eastbound traffic was moving slowly. One westbound lane – the inside lane west of the boat ramp – remained closed early Sunday morning because of damage on the roadway caused by the crash. Repair crews from the state Department of Transportation were en route to repair the damage but it was unclear when that would happen. Drivers were advised to use alternate routes if possible.
