TAMPA –  A Tampa man died this morning (March 6) when he was thrown from his motorcycle in a crash on Channelside Drive, according to the Tampa Police Department.

George Anthony Gamez, 23, died at the scene.

The crash happened about 9:15 a.m. at the intersection of Channelside Drive and S Florida Avenue in Tampa.

Police said Mr. Gamez was driving a motorcycle east on Channelside Drive approaching Florida Avenue. The motorcycle was in the far left lane, which is marked as a left-turn lane.

A vehicle headed in the same direction was in the lane next to the motorcycle, a lane in which left turns are also allowed. As the vehicle began to make a left turn to head northbound on Florida, the motorcycle failed to make the left turn and collided with the vehicle, officers said.

Mr. Gamez was thrown from the motorcycle and sustained fatal injuries.

Police said the motorcycle appeared to have been traveling at a high rate of speed. The crash remains under investigation. No charges have been filed and none are expected.
