The motorcycle driver lost control when he braked to avoid another vehicle that turned in front of him, FHP troopers said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Tampa motorcyclist died of injuries he suffered Sunday (April 14) in a crash on Dale Mabry Highway, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Michael S. Tapp, 49, of Tampa, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital where he was taken after the crash. His passenger, Kymberle A. Meade, 46, of Tampa, was taken to St. Joseph’s in critical condition. Troopers said neither one was wearing a helmet.

The crash happened about 8:38 p.m. at the intersection of Dale Mabry Highway and Idlewild Avenue in Hillsborough County.

Troopers said Mr. Tapp was driving a 2016 motorcycle north on Dale Mabry when an unknown vehicle turned into his path at the intersection. To avoid a collision, Mr. Tapp applied hard braking and lost control of the motorcycle, which overturned. Both Mr. Tapp and Ms. Meade were thrown from the bike.

Troopers said the unknown vehicle was described as a light-colored, long-wheelbase pickup truck that was last seen traveling east on Idlewild. Anyone with information about the crash or the unknown vehicle is asked to call the FHP at (813) 558-1800 or *FHP (*347).
