ZEPHYRHILLS – A Zephyrhills woman was killed when the motorcycle on which she was riding rear-ended a car Sunday (April 1) night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Karen E. King, 45, of Zephyrhills, died at the scene. The driver of the motorcycle, Mark E. Loveitt, 57, of Zephyrhills, was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in serious condition. Both were wearing helmets. It is unknown if either had been drinking.

The occupants of the other vehicle were not injured.

The crash happened about 8:28 p.m. in the westbound lanes of State Road 54 east of Morris Bridge Road in Zephyrhills. A 1999 Honda Civic driven by Samantha Marie Sweet, 17, of Wesley Chapel, was stopped for other traffic. Troopers said Loveitt, who was driving a 2003 Kawasaki motorcycle, failed to stop and rear-ended the Honda. Both Loveitt and Ms. King were thrown off the motorcycle.
