Motorcycle Driver Injured, Alligator Dies in Hillsborough Crash

The motorcycle driver is in serious condition.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A motorcycle driver was injured and an alligator died of injuries received this morning (May 19) in a Hillsborough County crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Calun Ethan Nelson, 27, of Wimauma, was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition. He was wearing a helmet. The 10-foot, 9-inch alligator was retrieved by trapper Rob Upthegrove and died this afternoon.

The crash happened about 12:28 a.m. on State Road 674 west of Katie Stanaland Road. An alligator was crossing 674 and traveled into the path of the 2016 Suzuki GSX-S driven by Nelson. The motorcycle hit the alligator and Nelson was thrown from the bike, troopers said. He landed on the overpass for the Little Manatee River.
