ST. PETERSBURG – A motorcycle driver remains in critical condition after a traffic crash Friday (June 1) night, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Matthew D. Chappell, 27, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with life threatening injuries. He was in critical but stable condition this morning (June 2). He was not wearing a helmet or any other safety equipment, officers said.

The crash happened about 9:19 p.m. at 15th Avenue S and 49th Street S.

Police said a 2008 Mazda CX-7, driven by Jessica L. Bays, 42, was southbound on 49th Street S, preparing to make a left turn onto 15th Avenue. Bays did not see the 2014 Kawasaki motorcycle that Chappell was driving north on 49th.

Bays turned left into Chappell’s path of travel, police said. The motorcycle struck the front passenger corner of the Mazda and Chappell was thrown from the bike.
