The other driver, who was in a Mack dump truck, was trying to avoid an accident, the Florida Highway Patrol said. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A mother and three children were seriously injured this morning in a head-on crash on U.S. 301, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Aimee L. Lopez, 40, and her three children, all from Zephyrhills, were taken to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries. Lopez and her son, Kieran, 6, were airlifted to the hospital. The other two children, Jayden, 13, and Alexis, 10, were taken by ambulance. The FHP said they were all in guarded condition early Wednesday (Aug. 23) afternoon.

Lisa D. Davis, 5, of Tampa, another driver in the three-vehicle crash, suffered minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital. The third driver, Vladimir Carvajal, 43, of Tampa, was not injured.

The crash happened about 6:23 a.m. on U.S. 301 south of Stacy Road in Hillsborough County.

Carvajal was driving a 2015 Mack dump truck north on 301 when he failed to see stopped traffic in front of him. Troopers said he braked and steered to the left to avoid a crash, but he hit the rear of the 2017 Kia Soul that Davis was driving.

The dump truck continued into the southbound lane where it hit head-on the 2008 Ford Explorer that Lopez was driving.
