HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A man in a wheelchair was killed this morning (June 7) when he was hit while trying to cross Hillsborough Avenue, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Richard Thomas Parnell, 68, of Tampa, died at the scene. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Troopers said the crash happened about 4:24 a.m. on Hillsborough Avenue west of Blue Springs Drive in Hillsborough County. Mr. Parnell was trying to cross Hillsborough Avenue, which was dark, and entered the path of a 2019 Acura MDX driven by Pedro Moleiro Diaz, 28, of Tampa.
