Man Crashes into Deputy, Leaves Scene, Dies in Second Crash

Alcohol is considered to be a factor in the crash, Hilllsborough deputies said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Plant City man died in a car crash this morning (Nov. 17) after he lost control of his of his car, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash happened shortly after he fled the scene when he hit a Hillsborough deputy’s vehicle. The deputy, Sgt. James Jackson, was not injured.

Jesse Lamar Wood, 25, of Plant City, died at the scene.

Deputies said Mr. Wood crashed into the back of the sheriff’s vehicle about 2:10 a.m.  while traveling westbound on State Road 60 at Limona Road. After causing the accident, Mr. Wood fled the scene in his 2010 Hyundai Elantra without stopping. Jackson’s vehicle was incapacitated by the impact and Mr. Wood was not pursued.

Mr. Wood traveled north on Limona Street at about 50 miles per hour. Deputies said he lost control of his car as he crossed the railroad grade just north of Victoria Street.

The Hyundai rolled over onto its side and Mr. Wood, who was unrestrained, died at the scene. Alcohol is considered a factor in this crash.
