He suffered a medical emergency and lost control of the car, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

WESLEY CHAPEL – A Lutz man died of injuries he received Monday (March 12) when the car he was driving became submerged in a pond, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

David P. Lamontagne, Jr., 22, of Lutz, died at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel of injuries he received in the crash. Two passengers in the car were treated at the scene and released.

The crash happened about 8:37 p.m. in the driveway of the Pasco County Recreation Center, 7727 Boyette Road in Wesley Chapel. Troopers said Mr. Lamontagne was driving a 2002 Hyundai Sonata west in the driveway of the recreation center when he suffered a medical emergency and lost control of the car. The Hyundai traveled over a curb and a plant bed, went down an embankment, and into a pond where it became submerged.

Pasco Fire Rescue and the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office said firefighters and deputies jumped into the water to help. Two passengers – a man and a woman – made it out safely but Mr. Lamontagne was trapped and remained in the water for a length of time.
