Lithia Motorcyclist Dies in State Road 60 Crash

The force of the impact overturned an SUV and broke the motorcycle into pieces, Polk deputies say. The driver of the SUV was injured but is expected to recover.

MULBERRY – A Lithia man died this morning (Sept. 17) when his motorcycle hit an SUV on State Road 60, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.

Lance Strickland, 22, of Lithia, died at the scene. He was wearing a helmet that came off during the crash.

The other driver, Amalia Casmiro, 54, of Mulberry, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash happened about 5:55 a.m. on SR 60 at Pine Grove Road in Mulberry in Polk County.

According to the evidence and witnesses, Mr. Strickland was driving his 2006 Suzuki sport motorcycle at a very high rate of speed east on SR 60, passing at least two different motorists. At the same
time, a 1993 Ford Explorer being driven by Casmiro was turning left onto Pine Grove Road from westbound SR 60 when the motorcycle struck her vehicle at the front passenger door, deputies said.

There was significant damage done to the SUV, and the impact was strong enoug hto flip it onto its side. Deputies said the motorcycle was also broken into pieces.

The eastbound lanes of SR 60 were closed for about three hours during the investigation. The investigation is ongoing and no charges are expected.
