The crash tied up traffic for several hours, Clearwater police said.

CLEARWATER – A Clearwater teen and his two passengers were injured in a single-vehicle crash this morning (May 16) on U.S. 19, the Clearwater Police Department said.

Hextor Armando Bonilla, 19, of Clearwater, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg as a trauma alert, but police said later that his injuries did not appear to be life threatening. His two passengers, women ages 19 and 23, were taken to Morton Plant Hospital with injuries that were thought to be minor.

The crash happened about 4:15 a.m. on U.S. 19 at the Seville Boulevard exit in Clearwater.

Police said Bonilla was driving a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe when it veered out of control in the southbound lane of U.S. 19. The SUV slammed into a divider at the Seville Boulevard exit and then spun off and traveled across all lanes of the highway before crashing into the concrete median separating northbound and southbound lanes.

The impact ejected Bonilla through the windshield and he landed in the northbound lanes, officers said. He was not struck by any northbound vehicles.

The crash closed portions of U.S. 19 and tied up traffic until about 7:30 a.m.

Speed is thought to have been a factor in the crash, police said.
