PINELLAS COUNTY – The Florida Highway Patrol is seeking a driver who fled the scene after causing a four-car crash that injured four people.

James Porter, 74, and his passenger, Mary Porter, 72, both of Clearwater, were taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with minor injuries. Carl Thornton, 71, and his passenger, Carol Thornton, 68, both of Clearwater, were taken to Bardmoor Emergency Center with minor injuries, troopers said. The driver of the fourth car, Mark Karnegie, 52, of Largo, was not hurt.

Troopers said the crash happened about 9:53 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 30) at U.S. 19 N and Roosevelt Boulevard. Troopers said they clocked a 2015 Honda Civic traveling northbound on U.S. 19 at 49th Street N at 90 mph. The speed limit was 55 mph. A trooper tried to stop the Honda, but it fled from the trooper.

The Honda continued up the U.S. 19 frontage road to Roosevelt Boulevard where it overtook and collided with a 2016 Honda CRV driven by James Porter. The impact caused the CRV to spin and hit a 2010 Volvo V50 driven by Carl Thornton. The Volvo, in turn, hit a 2012 Kia Rio driven by Karnegie.

After the crash, troopers said, the Civic’s driver got out of the car and fled through a nearby Carmax parking lot and into a RoadwayInn Hotel where he was last seen. Troopers described him as having shoulder-length braided hair. He was wearing a white shirt and blue jean shorts.
