Pinellas County sheriff’s deputies said they believe alcohol, speed and bad weather were contributing factors in the crash.
MADEIRA BEACH – Four people were seriously injured early this morning (Sept. 2) in a head-on crash on the Tom Stuart Causeway drawbridge, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.
Ronda Lee Chambers, 49, of Seminole, was airlifted to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with life-threatening injuries. Jacob David Peterson Jr., 21, of Seminole, the other driver; Jorge Arturo, 29, of St. Pete Beach; and Jason Andrew Bean, 37, of Seminole, passengers in the two cars, were all taken to Bayfront by ambulance. All had serious life-threatening injuries.
Deputies said they believe alcohol, speed and bad weather were contributing factors in the crash.
The crash happened about 2 a.m. A 2001 Chevrolet Corvette driven by Petersen was headed east on the Tom Stuart Causeway drawbridge. Deputies said Peterson lost control of the Chevrolet and crossed over the raised center median. The Chevrolet collided head on with a 2004 Nissan Altima driven by Chambers.
Both vehicles sustained substantial damage.
The Tom Stuart Causeway was closed for several hours while deputies conducted their investigation.
