One driver lost control of her car, which left the northbound lanes of I-275 and traveled into the southbound lanes, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The crash was alcohol related.

ST. PETERSBURG – Four people were seriously hurt and a fifth suffered minor injuries in a four-car crash on I-275 on Thursday (Sept. 6), the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Kim Gordon, 49, and John Matthews, 48, both of St. Petersburg, were taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg in serious condition. Laporsha Smalls, 26, and Tushawn Felton, 32, both of St. Petersburg, were taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in serious condition. Neither Matthews, Smalls, nor Felton were wearing seat belts. Gordon had been drinking, troopers said.

Karen Nice, 50, of St. Petersburg, was taken to Bayfront with minor injuries.

The crash happened about 12:11 p.m. on I-275 at about mile marker 23 in St. Petersburg.

Troopers said Gordon was driving a 2014 Toyota Camry south on I-275. The other vehicles involved in the crash were traveling north on I-275. Gordon lost control of the Toyota, which cross the median into the northbound traffic and collided with a 2003 Dodge Durango driven by Matthews. The Dodge rotated and came to rest in the center northbound lane.

The Toyota kept moving and hit the front of a 2001 Honda Accord that was driven by Smalls. The Honda came to rest in the outside northbound lane.

The Toyota spun and was hit by a 2013 Ford Focus driven by Nice, who brought her car to a controlled stop on the inside northbound shoulder of I-275.

Troopers say charges are pending.
