HERNANDO COUNTY – One man died and two were seriously injured Thursday (Dec. 20) night in a wrong-way crash on State Road 589, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Brian Scott Koger, 28, of Spring Hill, was taken to the Regional Medical Center at Bayonet Point in critical condition. Troopers said he had been drinking. Troopers said he died Saturday (Dec. 22) from his injuries.

The crash happened about 9:59 p.m. on SR 589 south of State Road 50 in Hernando County.

Troopers said Mr. Koger was driving a 2009 Honda Civic north in the southbound inside lane of SR 589. The Honda collided nearly head-on with the 2007 Ford Explorer that Amanda Sokolik was driving south in the southbound inside lane of SR 589.

It is not clear where Mr. Koger began driving the wrong way. Troopers said alcohol was a factor in the crash.
