The crash closed a portion of State Road 60 for about six and a half hours, FHP troopers said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – Both drivers were seriously injured early this morning (Dec. 12) in a head-on collision on State Road 60, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Walt Pfeifer, 70, of Valrico, was seriously injured. Matthew Bell, 34, also of Valrico, was in critical condition. Both were taken to Tampa General Hospital. Both had been drinking, troopers said.

The crash happened about midnight on SR 60 east of Miller Road in Hillsborough County.

Troopers said Pfeifer was driving a 2017 Jeep Cherokee west in the inside eastbound lane of SR 60. The Jeep collided head on with a 2012 Chevrolet Corvette driven by Bell.

After the impact, the Jeep overturned across all lanes before coming to rest on the south shoulder of the road. The Chevrolet came to rest in the median.

The crash closed the eastbound lanes of SR 60 until about 6:38 a.m.
