The deputy crashed into the rear of a car that was stopped on U.S. 19 N, according to the Pinellas Sheriff’s Office.

PALM HARBOR – Officials are investigating a deputy-involved traffic crash on U.S. 19 N that injured two drivers, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Angela Cappiello, 42, of New Port Richey, was taken to Mease Countryside hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.  Erin Mann, 40, of Tarpon Springs, to Advent Health North Pinellas Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Deputy Matthew Schultheis, 28, was not injured. Schultheis has worked for the Pinellas sheriff since March 21, 2016.

The crash happened about 1:14 p.m. today (April 1) on U.S. 19 N just south of Tampa Road in Palm Harbor.

Investigators said Schultheis was driving his fully marked 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe north on U.S. 19 N in the curb lane when he crashed into the rear end of the 2016 Toyota Camry that Cappiello was driving. The force of the impact pushed Cappiello’s Toyota into the rear of a 2005 Ford Focus driven by Mann.

Investigators say Cappiello and Mann were both stopped in traffic at the time of the crash.

Neither speed nor impairment appear to be factors in the crash.

The investigation is continuing.
