A Kia Soul rear-ended a tanker truck and trapped the car’s passengers inside, Tampa police said.

TAMPA – Two women were injured Wednesday (July 11) when their car overturned in a traffic crash on Adamo Drive, the Tampa Police Department said.

The passenger in the car was taken to Tampa General Hospital with critical injuries but is expected to survive. The driver was taken to Tampa General with minor injuries. The driver of the other vehicle, a tanker truck, was not injured. The names of those involved have not been released.

Police said they are working to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The crash happened about 10:15 p.m. on Adamo Drive near the intersection of N 34th Street. Investigators determined that a 2016 Kia Soul was traveling east on Adamo Drive. Police said the driver failed to notice that a tanker truck ahead of it had stopped at the railroad crossing as required by law.

The Kia struck the rear corner of the tanker truck and rolled over trapping both occupants. Tampa Fire Rescue responded, extricated both occupants and took them to Tampa General.

The eastbound lanes of Adamo Drive were closed for several hours during the investigation.
