The dirt bike driver was not wearing a helmet or other protective gear, the St. Petersburg police said.

ST. PETERSBURG – A dirt bike rider died early today (Aug. 17) from injuries he received when he was thrown from his bike Tuesday night (Aug. 16), according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Gregory Deontae Brinson, 26, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with life threatening injuries. Police said he succumbed to those injuries about 12:30 a.m. Aliyah Milton, 19, who was struck by the bike, was also taken to Bayfront with minor injuries, police said.

The crash happened about 9:45 p.m. when Mr. Brinson was driving his 2004 Kawasaki dirt bike in an “unsafe manner” north on Seventh Street S approaching the 17th Avenue intersection, police said. He swerved to avoid another vehicle in the intersection and hit the curb.  Mr. Brinson, who was not wearing a helmet or other protective clothing, was thrown from the dirt bike and slid to a stop on the east sidewalk along Seventh Street.

The dirt bike, now driverless, continued traveling northbound and struck Milton, who was standing on Seventh Street just north of where Mr. Brinson struck the curb. After striking Milton, the dirt bike continued northbound and struck a utility pole along the east side of Seventh, then came to a rest in the roadway, police said.
