Homeless Man, Lying in Road, Dies After Being Hit
He had been picked up by paramedics earlier in the evening after he was found lying in another roadway, Hillsborough deputies said.
TAMPA – A homeless man died of injuries he suffered when he was hit by an SUV while lying in Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.
Thomas Vinson Oliver, 57, died at Advent Fletcher emergency room where he was taken after the crash.
Deputies said Mr. Oliver had been picked up by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue earlier Sunday (March 17) evening after he was discovered lying down on Fletcher Avenue. He was taken to Haley Veterans Hospital, but he did not want to be admitted and left on foot. About 15 minutes later, he was struck about 9 p.m. while lying in the inside lane of southbound Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, just south of 131st Avenue in Tampa.
The driver did not see Mr. Oliver in the roadway and ran him over with her Toyota Tundra.
Deputies said there is no evidence that the driver was impaired during this crash. No charges are expected at this time.
