Hit and Run Crash Kills Pasco Pedestrian

The man was hit by three separate vehicles, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

PASCO COUNTY – A New Port Richey man died Saturday (Oct. 28) night when he was hit by three vehicles while crossing U.S. 19, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Stephen John Matava Jr., 56, of New Port Richey, died at the scene.

The crash happened about 10:33 p.m. on U.S. 19 just south of Saltwater Boulevard. Troopers said Mr. Matava was crossing U.S. 19 west when he walked into the path of oncoming traffic.

He was first hit by an unknown vehicle that left the scene. He was then hit by a 2002 Toyota Tundra driven by Christian Wheat, 26, of Hudson. Mr. Matava was then struck a third time by a 2000 Ford Explorer driven by Cherie Leger, 58, of Hudson.

Troopers are searching for the unknown vehicle, which was described as a charcoal gray Hyundai sedan or SUV with front end damage and missing its left outside mirror and headlight. Anyone with information about the vehicle or the crash is asked to call the Highway Patrol at *FHP or Crime Stoppers.
