Hillsborough Crash Kills Man on Scooter

The driver failed to yield to the man, who was on a powered scooter in the pedestrian crosswalk, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Tampa man died Wednesday (July 26) of injuries he received when hit by a truck while he was crossing a street, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Sheldon Frank Evans, 74, of Tampa, died at Tampa General Hospital where he was taken after the crash.

The crash happened about 1:53 p.m. at the intersection of State Road 574 and Lakewood Drive. Danien Tehran Avery, 38, of Gibsonton, was driving a 2004 International CB 4000 east on SR 574. Mr. Evans was on a powered scooter in the marked pedestrian crosswalk, troopers said.

Avery tried to turn south onto Lakewood and failed to yield right of way to Mr. Evans, troopers said. The truck hit Mr. Avery.
