Gandy Crash Claims Motorcycle Driver

His motorcycle overturned and caught fire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

PINELLAS COUNTY – A Largo man died Monday (April 25) of injuries he received in a motorcycle crash on Gandy Boulevard, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Jan G. Melendez-Miranda, 20, died at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where he was taken after the crash. There were no other injuries in the crash.

The crash happened about 11:59 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Gandy east of San Fernando Boulevard. Troopers said Mr. Melendez-Miranda was driving a 2001 Yamaha motorcycle at a high rate of speed when he overtook and crashed into the rear of a 2007 Honda CRV driven by Eric Michael Guntert, 18, of Tampa.

Mr. Melendez-Miranda was thrown from his motorcycle, which overturned and caught fire. The Honda spun and collided with the inside barrier wall.
