Florida Avenue Crash Kills Motorcyclist

He was riding on the rear wheel with the headlight shining upward, FHP troopers said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A New Port Richey man died of injuries he suffered Wednesday (March 20) night in a crash on N Florida Avenue, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Tristan Velez, 36, of New Port Richey, died at Advent Health Tampa where he was taken after the crash. The other driver was also taken to Advent Health with minor injuries.

The crash happened about 8:20 p.m. at the intersection of N Florida Avenue and Celestial Oaks Drive in Hillsborough County.

Troopers said Mr. Velez was riding a 2018 Kawasaki motorcycle north on N Florida Avenue. He was riding the bike on its rear wheel with the headlamp facing skyward when he was hit by a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt that was in a continuous left turn lane for Celestial Oaks Drive. Troopers said the Chevrolet’s driver could not see him.

Mr. Velez was thrown from the bike and hit the Chevrolet.

No charges are expected.
