TARPON SPRINGS – A Tarpon Springs man died Friday (Sept. 29) of injuries he suffered in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 19, according to the Tarpon Springs Police Department.

Barrett Richard Phelps, 43, of Tarpon Springs, died at Florida Hospital North Pinellas where he was taken after the crash. The driver of a 2012 Ford Mustang, one of the other vehicles involved in the crash, sustained minor injuries.

The crash happened about 8:14 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 19 and Mango Street. Officers said Mr. Phelps, who was riding a 2005 Yamaha south on U.S. 19, hit the rear of the Mustang, which had made a legal U-turn from northbound U.S. 19 to southbound U.S. 19. No one was injured in the third vehicle, a 2018 Chevrolet SUV.

The impact threw Mr. Phelps off his bike into the center median. The motorcycle continued in the travel lane and hit the Chevrolet. The motorcycle and Chevrolet came to a rest and burst into flames.

This crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information, or who witnessed the crash, is asked to contact Officer Christine Brinker or Sgt. Frank Ruggiero at (727) 938-2849.
