FHP Arrests Driver after Wrong-Way Hillsborough Crash

The woman refused a breath test, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Tampa woman was charged with DUI after she collided with a guard rail and construction equipment while driving the wrong way, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Dezelle P. Bennett, 26, of 7115 Boundary Blvd. S, was charged with two counts of DUI with property damage and driving the wrong way, the FHP said. She was taken to Tampa General Hospital for minor injuries.

The crash happened about 10:11 p.m. Friday (Sept. 30) on the eastbound exit ramp from U.S. 41 to State Road 618. Bennett was driving a 2015 Chrysler 200 westbound while trying to get onto eastbound SR 618, troopers said. When she saw oncoming traffic, troopers said Bennett pulled to the pulled to the outside shoulder and continued to drive on the grass median separating the on/off ramps. She collided with a guardrail then a piece of road construction equipment.

Troopers later arrested Bennett because she appeared to be highly intoxicated. Once at the Hillsborough County Jail, she refused a breath test.
