HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Valrico man died Monday (Dec. 5) when a semi tractor-trailer hit the farm tractor he was driving, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

James B. Simmons, 84, died at the scene, the FHP said. Tommy Mars, 57, of Lake Alfred, the semi driver, was taken to South Bay Hospital with minor injuries.

The crash happened about 3 p.m. on State Road 674 east of Owens Lake Road. Troopers said both the semi and the farm tractor were traveling west on 674. The farm tractor was partly on the shoulder of the road and partly on 674. Mars did not see the tractor, troopers said. The right front of the semi hit the rear of the farm tractor. The crash caused the semi to leave the road and hit the tree line on the south shoulder of the road, troopers said.
