HERNANDO COUNTY – A woman who was about seven months’ pregnant lost her baby Wednesday (Aug. 30) as the result of injuries she and the baby received in a traffic crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Monica Montanez, 27, of Frostproof, was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Troopers said Montanez, who was 33 weeks pregnant, lost the child, who died from injuries received in the crash.

Richard Brent Henderson, 27, of Webster, the other driver, suffered minor injuries. He was not taken to a hospital.

The crash happened about 5:40 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 301 and Cornerstone Drive. Henderson was driving a 1999 Ford F250 eastbound on Cornerstone in heavy fog. Montanez was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox south on U.S. 301. Troopers said Henderson failed to stop at the intersection and traveled into the path of the Chevrolet and the two vehicles collided.

After the collision, both vehicles rotated and hit each other again before coming to a final rest on the east shoulder of U.S. 301.
