Workers are preparing for construction of the Selmon Extension. Drivers are asked to watch out for sudden stops, merging traffic and work zone operations.

TAMPA – Drivers along portions of the Selmon Expressway can expect traffic tangles this week as preparation continues for the construction of the Selmon Extension.

The extension is a 1.6-mile toll lane, located in the median of Gandy Boulevard that will allow a choice for regional travelers: use Gandy Boulevard for local destinations or use the Selmon Extension for a direct connection (eastbound) to the Selmon Expressway or Dale Mabry or (westbound) to the Gandy Bridge.

Beginning Monday (Dec. 18),. through Wednesday (Dec. 20), the southbound Selmon Expressway Dale Mabry Highway exit ramp right shoulder will be closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for geotechnical work. In addition, there  may be short intermittent temporary lane closures along eastbound and westbound Gandy Boulevard from 7 a.m. t o 6 p.m. Monday through Friday to allow TECO to accurately locate utilities, again in preparation for the Selmon Extension.

Also beginning Monday and continuing through Friday, both eastbound and westbound Gandy Boulevard left through lanes between Westshore Boulevard and Bridge Street will be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. There will also be an eastbound Gandy Boulevard left through lane closure during this same time frame just east of S Church Avenue and west of Dale Mabry Highway. There may be intermittent stop-and-go traffic queue restrictions on eastbound and westbound Gandy Boulevard at the Bridge Street turn lanes at night. Workers will be performing geotechnical work, installing barrier wall and temporary striping and signage.

Customers are reminded that the Gandy Park South on the south side of Gandy Boulevard and the Al Palonis Park on the north side of Gandy Boulevard is closed for the duration of the Selmon Extension construction. The Gandy boat ramp will remain open.
