The “Estuary” design for the Selmon Extension Pier won with 74 percent of the vote.

TAMPA – The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority announced Monday (Oct. 23)  that the “Estuary” pier design option received the most votes in the “Vote for Your Favorite Pier Design” public opinion poll.

The announcement was made during THEA’s monthly board meeting.

Of the 1,805 votes, the “Estuary” design option, representing nature envisioned in the form of a river delta or canopy of cypress trees, received 74 percent of the votes from the public opinion poll. The “Vivid” design option received 26 percent of the votes.

“We received nearly2,000 votes from members of the community participating in the public opinion poll and the overwhelming choice was ‘Estuary,'”  THEA CEO Joe Waggoner said. “While both pier designs were outstanding options, THEA is confident the ‘Estuary’ design will not only enhance the Selmon Extension project but will serve as a new landmark for the Tampa Bay region.”

The two pier design options: “Vivid” and “Estuary” were unveiled during THEA’s Oct. 9 virtual town hall meeting. Post cards were also sent to zip codes around Gandy Boulevard. The public was asked to vote on its favorite design option online or by toll-free telephone hotline.

Construction of the Selmon Extension has begun, with an anticipated operational date in late 2020. The Selmon Extension is a 1.9-mile toll lane in the median above Gandy Boulevard that will offer a choice for regional travelers: use Gandy Boulevard for local destinations or use the Selmon Extension for a direct connection to the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, Dale Mabry Highway or the Gandy Bridge.
