ST. PETERSBURG – Both drivers were seriously injured in an early morning crash on First Avenue S, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Joseph Caradonna, 23, and Kerry Rashad Murphy, 28, suffered serious injuries.

The crash happened about 5:08 a.m. Monday (Jan. 14) at the intersection of First Avenue S and 48th Street in St. Petersburg.

Police said Caradonna was driving a 2001 Toyota Tundra east on First Avenue center lane. Murphy was driving Independent Cab No. 69, a 2002 Mercury, south on 48th Street. When the two reached the intersection, the Mercury failed to yield to the Toyota and hit the truck.

The Mercury spun a few times and came to a rest at the south curb of First Avenue. The Toyota continued east on First but veered off the road and crashed into two trees at 4720 First Ave. S.

The crash remains under investigation.
