Driver Left Scene After Hitting Pedestrian, St. Pete Police Say

The pedestrian was in a marked crosswalk, according to St. Petersburg police.

ST. PETERSBURG – Charges are pending against a driver who left the scene after hitting a pedestrian Saturday (March 16) night, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

The pedestrian, a 74-year-old man whose name was not immediately available, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with life-threatening injuries.

The crash happened about 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Central Avenue and 28th Street N in St. Petersburg.

Police said the pedestrian was in a marked crosswalk on 28th Street N when he was hit by a Ford F150 pickup truck driven by Dwight Horne, 48, of St. Petersburg. The truck was northbound on 28th Street N crossing Central Avenue when it hit the pedestrian.

Horne did not stop, but police said they found him a short time after.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending, according to officers.
